PoE (Power over Ethernet) power supply
What is PoE?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that enables the transmission of electrical power and data over a standard Ethernet cable (CAT5e, CAT6, etc.). Thanks to PoE, you can power network devices such as access points, IP cameras, VoIP phones or other devices without the need to use additional power cables.

How does PoE work?

PoE technology uses pairs of wires in an Ethernet cable to transmit data and power simultaneously. PoE standards, such as IEEE 802.3af (PoE) and IEEE 802.3at (PoE+), define specifications for the amount of power that can be transmitted and the methods for delivering power.

PoE standards:
  • IEEE 802.3af (PoE): Delivers up to 15.4W of power per device.
  • IEEE 802.3at (PoE+): Delivers up to 25.5W of power per device.
  • IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++): Delivers up to 60W (Type 3) and 100W (Type 4) power to the device.
Advantages of PoE
Ease of installation

PoE eliminates the need to install separate power cables, simplifying and speeding up the installation process. Simply connect an Ethernet cable to your device to provide it with power and data simultaneously.

Thanks to PoE, you can place network devices in places where there is no access to electrical sockets, which increases flexibility in designing and expanding the network.

Cost savings

Reducing the amount of cables and associated installation and maintenance costs makes PoE an economical solution. Moreover, reducing energy consumption through intelligent power management helps in energy savings.

Centralization of management

PoE allows you to centrally manage the power of all devices from one point, making it easier to monitor and control the network. In the event of a power failure, the central UPS system can ensure uninterrupted operation of all network devices.

PoE applications
Wireless networks

PoE is commonly used in Wi-Fi access points, which are often placed in hard-to-reach places such as ceilings or walls. Thanks to PoE, the installation of access points is quick and hassle-free.

IP cameras

IP surveillance cameras powered by PoE can be easily installed in places where traditional power is not available. PoE also enables central power management and camera status monitoring.

VoIP phones

VoIP phones using PoE can be placed anywhere an Ethernet port is available. This makes it much easier to expand and change the office configuration.

Other devices

PoE is also used to power other network devices such as switches, RFID access points, access control systems, and more.
