What is PoE?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that enables the transmission of electrical power and data over a standard Ethernet cable (CAT5e, CAT6, etc.). Thanks to PoE, you can power network devices such as access points, IP cameras, VoIP phones or other devices without the need to use additional power cables.

How does PoE work?

PoE technology uses pairs of wires in an Ethernet cable to transmit data and power simultaneously. PoE standards, such as IEEE 802.3af (PoE) and IEEE 802.3at (PoE+), define specifications for the amount of power that can be transmitted and the methods for delivering power.

PoE standards:
  • IEEE 802.3af (PoE): Delivers up to 15.4W of power to the device.
  • IEEE 802.3at (PoE+): Delivers up to 25.5W of power to the device.
  • IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++): Delivers up to 60W (Type 3) and 100W (Type 4) power per device.
